Looking for things to do in New Westminster? Westminster Pier Park is the kind of place where a quick walk turns into a riverfront stroll, a coffee stop becomes lunch at River Market, and you suddenly realize you realize hours have passed just enjoying our city.

Activities Along the Boardwalk

For those not from here, our waterfront path runs from Westminster Pier Park through the Esplanade, across the land and the Fraser River.
We’ve been known to shoot some hoops at the basketball court near the festival lawn, or let our kids play at the playground (beneath the Sixth Street overpass). And when those hot summer days come, the spray park keeps everyone cool and refreshed.
Park Features and Public Art

Westminster Pier Park opened in 2012 on what used to be industrial waterfront; the “Community on the River” art and Memory Band tell the story of New Westminster’s rich history through compelling photos and text. The festival lawn hosts events year-round, from farmers’ markets to movie nights, always bringing our community together!
The boardwalk provides views of Fraser River traffic, including tugboats, barges, and paddlewheelers (which you can ride!). Near River Market, you can pop into the Samson V Maritime Museum and Fraser River Discovery Centre if you want to learn more about the working river, or grab a drink at the local brewery.
Scenic Walking and Cycling Routes
Looking for a stunning view while you get your steps in? The Westminster Pier Park and Esplanade system offers paved trails with views of the Fraser River running along the downtown waterfront.
Our Favourite Routes:
- Full Waterfront Esplanade: Take the complete path from Pier Park east to Sapperton Landing
- Pier Park Loop: Start at Fourth Street overpass, walk the boardwalk, return via Sixth Street
- Quay to Pier: Connect River Market to Westminster Pier Park for shopping and riverside walking

Riverside Eats and Treats

After working up an appetite on the boardwalk, you’ll find various restaurants right at the Quay. We often head to River Market’s food court, where Angelina’s serves Dutch pannekoeken and breakfast food, Longtail Kitchen offers authentic Thai cuisine, and Tre Galli has delicious Italian gelato. The concession stand at Pier Park operates in spring and summer, serving ice cream and snacks. For sit-down meals, head over to Columbia Street where restaurants line the historic downtown blocks.
Parks and Playgrounds
After grabbing food, you’re all set to enjoy family-friendly activities. The playground beneath the Sixth Street overpass keeps the kids busy for hours, and features structures for different age groups, plus it’s covered, so a little rain won’t ruin your fun day at the park. On top of that, the festival lawn is the perfect spot for running around, flying kites, or kicking a ball.
Kids love watching the tugboats and barges go by on the Fraser River, and if you time it right, you might catch a paddlewheeler. And on hot summer days, the spray park is the place to be!
Bring your bikes and scooters; the boardwalk is the perfect spot for safe, easy cruising.
